July 17 — Sunday Reading James Martin SJ and Harper Lee bio

Ah, a summer Sunday.  There’s a little extra time before church to read and relax since Sunday school is on hiatus.

This morning I’m thankful for print and online reading.  In print, I’m nearing the end of Mockingbird: A Portrait of Harper Lee.  It’s a book I’ve been picking up here and there throughout the summer — the writing is engaging and well researched, so that’s easy to do.

And in the online realm, I’ve been scanning my Twitter feed.  One of my favorite people to follow is JamesMartinSJ.  I recently read his book The Jesuit Guide to (Almost) Everything (2010) and loved it.  In it, he talks about watching a biography of Thomas Merton’s life and how Merton’s smile resonated with him.  That film and reading Seven Story Mountain propelled him to the priesthood.  When I see the smiling face of JamesMartinSJ pop up on my Twitter feed, I feel similarly inspired to find God in all things, as the Jesuits strive to do.

Here’s one of his tweets from today: “Gospel: Even the smallest act of charity and kindness for someone can produce the greatest of effects in his or her life. And yours, too.”

I’d love to know about your Sunday reading, and I hope it was as pleasant as mine.
